As energy demands surge and the effects of climate change intensify, Rhode Island-based energy innovator E2SOL LLC has introduced a visionary solution: the Smart Solar Highway Project. This initiative reimagines highway infrastructure as a source of clean, sustainable energy by installing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on existing concrete median barriers across the state.

With Rhode Island targeting Net-Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2050, this project addresses multiple state goals without requiring the disruption of pristine landscapes or clashing with local zoning ordinances. By leveraging 73.2 miles of existing highway concrete barriers, E2SOL's integrated PV microgrid system provides a dual benefit--generating renewable energy while reducing transportation-sector emissions.
A Scalable and Resilient Solar Infrastructure
E2SOL's Smart Solar Highway design mounts high-efficiency solar modules (635W) on custom brackets above highway medians. With integrated 1 kWh storage per module, the system is expected to generate approximately 65,931 MWh of electricity annually, enough to power over 9,300 Rhode Island homes.
The system includes modular energy storage to supply power during evening hours and inclement weather, enhancing grid reliability. Energy generated can support Electric Vehicle Charging (EVC) stations, highway lighting, and traffic systems. The surplus capacity increases the resilience of critical transportation infrastructure and supports uninterrupted service during outages.

Economic and Environmental Impact
The estimated 65,931 MWh annual output could offset 29,104 metric tons of CO??, equivalent to emissions from nearly 6,800 gasoline-powered vehicles per year. Additionally, under Rhode Island's Net Metering program, this clean energy generation could translate into cost savings of $14.25 million annually (based on the state's 2023 average retail electricity rate of $0.2162/kWh).
E2SOL also projects further revenue opportunities via long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), allowing energy sales to utilities or local communities at reduced rates compared to traditional suppliers.
Equity, Sustainability, and Statewide Reach
Strategically located within proximity to disadvantaged communities, Rhode Island's highway medians offer a unique opportunity to bring clean energy access to Environmental Justice Communities (EJCs). These communities often face higher pollution burdens and limited infrastructure for clean transportation. The project aligns with environmental equity goals and could enhance access to affordable renewable power for underserved neighborhoods.
Positioning Rhode Island as a Clean Energy Leader
E2SOL's initiative not only supports the state's climate action goals but also strengthens its national image as a leader in renewable infrastructure. The Smart Solar Highway model is scalable and replicable, positioning Rhode Island as a testing ground for next-generation green technologies with potential for adoption nationwide.
"This project reflects our commitment to practical and inclusive clean energy solutions," said Anthony Baro, Managing Principal at E2SOL LLC. "By rethinking existing assets, we're offering a resilient, community-focused energy strategy without sacrificing natural spaces."
