WINNIPEG - Newly released documents show the Manitoba government rebated purchases of Tesla vehicles more than any other carmaker in recent months under a program that encourages people to buy electric automobiles. The documents, obtained by The Canadian Press under the freedom of information law, say owners were rebated for 337 Tesla vehicle purchases between last August and this February. Just under $1.3 million in rebates went to Tesla owners — more than 20 per cent of all refunds issued during that period. The Manitoba government ended rebates for purchases of Tesla vehicles and those made in China as part of its budget in March, to protest against tariffs imposed by the United States and China. Tesla has come under fire because its chief executive, Elon Musk, has served as an adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump. Manitoba's rebate program was launched last summer and offers electric vehicle purchasers up to $4,000, if the vehicle is a qualifying model and has a suggested retail price of less than $70,000.
