Harmony Gold Mining Co Ltd was incorporated and registered as a public Company in South Africa on August 25, 1950. The Company and its subsidiaries are engaged in underground and surface gold mining and related activities, including exploration, extraction and processing. The Company has 11 underground mines, one open-pit mine and several surface operations, mostly in South Africa's world-renowned Witwatersrand Basin, as well as in the Kraaipan Greenstone Belt. In PNG, it has a 50% joint venture with Newcrest Mining Limited in the Hidden Valley open-pit gold and silver mine, the Wafi-Golpu project, and extensive exploration tenements. The Company owns exploration portfolio focus on highly-prospective areas in PNG. Gold bullion, the group's principal product, is currently produced at its operations in South Africa and Papua New Guinea. The Company has operations in Papua New Guinea, where the construction of the Hidden Valley mine is being completed, as well as in Western Australia. It is currently the third largest producer of gold in South Africa. In South Africa, it operates a total of 11 underground operations, several surface operations including an opencast mine, and eight processing plants which are all located in the currently known goldfields in the Witwatersrand basin of South Africa as well as the Kraaipan Greenstone Belt. Its interests internationally are currently located in PNG and represent 42% of its total proved and probable reserves. The Company's gold-focused exploration program has two components: on-mine exploration, which looks for resources within the economic radius of existing mines; and new mine exploration, which is the global search for early to advanced stage projects. It conducts exploration activities on its own or with joint venture partners. The Company currently has eight operational metallurgical plants in South Africa. It also has a metallurgical plant at the Hidden Valley project in PNG. The main gold extraction processes the Company uses are carbon in leach, or CIL, and carbon in pulp, or CIP. Its Wafi project comprises the sedimentary/volcaniclastic rocks of the Owen Stanley Formation that surround the Wafi Diatreme and host the gold mineralization. Gold mineralization occurs as high-sulphidation epithermal alteration overprinting porphyry mineralization and epithermal style vein-hosted and replacement gold mineralization with associated wall-rock alteration. The Company is subject to environmental regulations.
