Guangshen Railway Co Ltd was established on March 6, 1996. The Company is engaged in passenger and freight transportation businesses, the Hong Kong Through Train passenger services in cooperation with MTR Corporation Limited, and management services for commissioned transportation for other railway companies in the PRC. The Company is also engaged in the provision of integrated services in relation to railway facilities and technology, commercial trading and other industrial businesses that are consistent with the Company's objectives. Passenger transportation is the main business of the Company. As of December 31, 2013, the Company operated 229 pairs of passenger trains each day, including 105 pairs of intercity high-speed passenger trains between Guangzhou and Shenzhen, 13 pairs of Hong Kong Through Trains and 111 pairs of long-distance trains. The Company is well-equipped with comprehensive freight facilities and is able to efficiently transport full load cargo, single load cargo, containers, bulky and overweight cargo, dangerous cargo, fresh and live cargo, and oversized cargo, and the rail lines operated are closely knitted with the ports in Guangzhou and Shenzhen and are connected to several large industrial zones, logistics zones and plants and mines in the Pearl River Delta region via the railroad sidings. Its other businesses consist of sale of materials and supplies, maintenance and repair of trains, on-board catering services, labour services, operation of restaurants, hotels and warehouses, and other businesses related to railway transportation. As a joint stock limited company with publicly traded shares, it is subject to regulation by the PRC securities regulatory authorities with respect to its compliance with PRC securities laws and regulations.
