Lean Hogs Futures Market News and Commentary

Lean Hogs Gain after Weekend

Front month lean hog futures are trading up 7 to 40 cents for Monday’s midday. Pork cutout futures are a nickel to 42 cents higher so far. The 1/21 CME Lean Hog Index was up 15 cents to $65.55. USDA’s National Average Base Hog price was up 16 cents to $55.72 in the AM quote. The National Pork Carcass Cutout value was quoted at $82.46 in the AM report, 37 cents lower. Picnic cuts were $6.01 higher, and ribs were up $4.13, but bellies offset with a $9.04 drop. USDA estimates the week’s hog slaughter at 2.738m head through Saturday. Midwest transportation will be snarled Monday and Tuesday by a winter storm featuring up to a foot of snow.
