Redwire Corporation (NYSE: RDW), a leading provider of aerospace and defense technologies, has announced the successful completed the first deployment test for one of its Roll-Out Solar Arrays (ROSA). These arrays are being developed to power the Power and Propulsion Element (PPE) of NASA's upcoming lunar Gateway, an essential component of future deep space exploration missions.
The ROSAs are designed to deliver up to 60 kilowatts of electricity--making them the most powerful of their kind ever constructed. This level of output is expected to significantly enhance the capabilities of the Gateway, supporting critical operations such as extended research, resource extraction, and astronaut safety in space. The technology also holds potential value for national security applications.
Redwire is working under a contract from Maxar Technologies, the primary contractor for the PPE, to develop two solar array wings. The ROSAs will undergo further testing in the coming months ahead of a planned delivery to Maxar in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Adam Biskner, President of Redwire Space Systems, emphasized the strategic importance of the project: "These ROSAs are a major technological achievement that will support the advancement of human spaceflight. We are honored to be a trusted infrastructure partner for the Gateway mission and grateful for Maxar's collaboration."
The unveiling event was attended by representatives from key industry and international space agencies, including Maxar, Northrop Grumman, the European Space Agency (ESA), the Canadian Consulate, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) of the UAE. The gathering showcased broad global support for the Gateway initiative.
Mike Gold, Redwire President of Civil and International Space, highlighted the significance of international collaboration: "Over 60% of Gateway's funding is provided by global partners, easing the burden on U.S. taxpayers. This collaboration not only fosters space exploration but also ensures that the United States maintains its leadership role in lunar and Martian missions."
