Russell 2000 E-Mini Futures Market News and Commentary

Stocks See Support from Higher Chip Stocks and Earnings Optimism

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is up +0.05%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) is up +0.20%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +0.06%. 

US stock indexes today are slightly higher on strength in chip stocks and carry-over support from Thursday’s dovish initial unemployment claims report.

Stocks also have support from generally positive Q1 earnings results.  Q1 earnings are expected to climb +6.5% y/y, well above the pre-earnings season estimate of +3.8%.  According to data compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence, about 81% of reporting S&P 500 companies have beaten Q1 earnings estimates. 

However, stocks gave up earlier gains because of higher T-note yields and a disappointing consumer sentiment report that showed both weaker consumer sentiment and higher inflation expectations.
