Feeder Cattle Futures Market News and Commentary

Cattle Board Works Higher Despite Soft Export Interest

Live cattle futures were higher on Thursday.  The CME shows net changes for the day of +$.50 to +$1.17.  Cash trade activity has been quiet, with a few bids at $185 reported in KS and $193 in NE. Feeder cattle futures were hindered by higher feed costs, settling 5 to 12 cents lower.  The CME Feeder Cattle Index was up $1.09 on June 12 at $255.86. 

Beef export sales totaled 11,978 MT in the week ending on June 6, a 12-week low. Shipments in that week were a 3-week high at 16,570 MT.

USDA wholesale Boxed Beef prices were higher on Thursday.  Choice boxes were up 71 cents to $318.31, with Select 32  cents higher at $299.25. The Chc/Select spread widened to $19.06.  USDA estimated daily FI slaughter for Thursday was 122,000 head, taking the weekly total to 589,000 head.  That matches the previous week but is 13,581 head below the same point last year.
