CME Sugar #11 Futures Market News and Commentary

Sugar Pushes Higher as the Brazilian Real Rallies

July NY world sugar #11 (SBN24) this morning is up +0.11 (+0.57%), and Aug London ICE white sugar #5 (SWQ24) is up +3.50 (+0.61%).

Sugar prices this morning are moderately higher.  Short covering emerged in sugar futures today after the Brazilian real (^USDBRL) rallied to a 3-week high against the dollar.  Strength in the real discourages export selling from Brazil's sugar producers.

Gains in sugar prices are limited due to today's decline in crude prices (CLM24) to a 1-1/2 month low.  Weaker crude prices undercut ethanol prices and may prompt global sugar mills to divert more cane crushing to sugar production instead of ethanol, thus boosting sugar supplies.

Another negative for sugar prices was last Friday's report from Unica that showed 2024/25 Brazil sugar production in the first half of April jumped +31.0% y/y to 710 MT.  Also, the percentage of sugarcane crushed for sugar production increased to 43.64% from 38.01% last year, signaling increased sugar supplies...
