Crude Oil WTI Futures Market News and Commentary

Crude Posts Moderate Gains on Tight Supplies and US Energy Demand Optimism

June WTI crude oil (CLM24) on Thursday closed up +0.60 (+0.76%), and June RBOB gasoline (RBM24) closed up +4.10 (+1.64%).

Crude oil and gasoline settled moderately higher on Thursday.  Crude has carryover support from Wednesday's weekly EIA report, which showed declines in crude and gasoline supplies.  Also, Thursday's rally in the S&P 500 to a new record high shows optimism in the economic outlook that supports energy demand.  Strength in the dollar Thursday and weaker-than-expected global economic news limited the upside in crude prices.

Thursday's global economic news was primarily weaker-than-expected and bearish for energy demand and crude prices.  US weekly initial unemployment claims fell -10,000 to 222,000, showing a weaker labor market than expectations of 220,000.  Also, US Apr manufacturing production unexpectedly fell -0.3% m/m, weaker than expectations of +0.1% m/m.  In addition, US Apr building permits (a proxy for future construction) unexpectedly fell -3....
