Coffee Prices Ease on Stronger Dollar

July arabica coffee (KCN24) Friday closed down -0.30 (-0.15%), and July ICE robusta coffee (RMN24) closed up +1 (+0.03%).

July arabica coffee Friday posted a 1-week high but then fell back on some pre-weekend technical selling and the stronger dollar.

Coffee prices have underlying support from insufficient rainfall in Vietnam and Brazil.  The Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association said Thursday that this month's total rainfall in Vietnam's Dak Lak province, a key coffee-growing region, is likely to be 50% lower than last year.

Also, Somar Meteorologia reported Monday that Brazil's Minas Gerais region received no rainfall or 0% of the historical average in the past week, the second consecutive week the area has received no rainfall.  Minas Gerais accounts for about 30% of Brazil's arabica crop.

In a supportive factor for robusta coffee, Vietnam's General Department of Customs reported Friday that April Vietnam coffee exports fell -19.5% m/m and -7% y/y to 152,073 MT... Read more
