Cattle futures settled $.87 to $1.50 higher, continuing to chop around in a trading range. Feeder cattle futures were up 60 to 85 cents. Wholesale beef prices were mixed again today. USDA reports the average for Choice boxed beef was down $1.26. Select boxed beef was 30 cents higher. Week to date slaughter is 368,000 head, about 2,000 above last Wednesday but 12,000 head smaller than year ago for the same period. There has been little activity thus far on the cash cattle front for this week. Trade estimates for Friday’s Cattle on Feed report anticipate that June 1 numbers will be down about 3.5% from year ago, with placements and marketings during May also below year ago levels.
