Cocoa #7 Futures Market News and Commentary

NY Cocoa Prices Slip as the Dollar Rallies

July ICE NY cocoa (CCN25) Monday closed down -97 (-1.06%), and July ICE London cocoa #7 (CAN25) closed up +55 (+0.83%).

Cocoa prices on Monday settled mixed due to currency fluctuations.  Monday's rally in the dollar (DXY00) to a 1-month high undercut NY cocoa prices.  However, Monday's fall in the British pound (^GBPUSD) to a 4-week low boosted London cocoa prices.

A rebound in current cocoa inventories is bearish for prices.  Since falling to a 21-year low of 1,263,493 bags on January 24, ICE-monitored cocoa inventories held in US ports have rebounded and climbed to a 7-1/2 month high last Friday of 2,112,402 bags.  

Quality concerns regarding the Ivory Coast cocoa mid-crop, which is currently being harvested, support prices.  Cocoa processors are complaining about the crop's quality and have rejected truckloads of Ivory Coast cocoa beans.  Processors said about 5% to 6% of the mid-crop cocoa in each truckload is poor quality, compared with 1% during the main cro...
