Coffee Prices Fall as ICE Coffee Inventories Rebound

July arabica coffee (KCN24) on Monday closed down -5.10 (-2.54%), and July ICE robusta coffee (RMN24) closed down -41 (-1.19%).

Coffee prices on Monday retreated due to a recovery in ICE coffee inventories.  ICE-monitored arabica coffee inventories on Monday climbed to a 13-month high of 721,723 bags.  Also, ICE-monitored robusta coffee inventories Monday rose to a 5-1/2 month high of 4,071 lots.

Coffee prices have underlying support from insufficient rainfall in Vietnam and Brazil.  On Monday, Vietnam's National Weather Agency said that rainfall in Vietnam's Central Highland, the main coffee-growing region, totaled 195.6 mm in the ten days from May 1, 41% below the long-term average.

Also, Somar Meteorologia reported Monday that Brazil's Minas Gerais region received no rainfall or 0% of the historical average in the past week, the third straight week the area has received no rainfall.  Minas Gerais accounts for about 30% of Brazil's arabica crop.
