Live cattle futures closed the Monday trading session with $1.07 to $1.47 losses. Feb contracts have dropped $4.02 since 12/30 with 7 of those 8 sessions red. USDA reported the bulk of the week’s activity has been near $138. Feeder cattle futures ended with $1.17 to $1.42 losses. The 1/07 CME Feeder Cattle Index was $161.98, 19 cents higher.
Wholesale Boxed Beef prices were higher on Monday. USDA quoted Choice boxes $4.22 higher at $276.04, with a $5.40 bump for Select to $266.50. USDA estimated Monday’s federally inspected cattle slaughter at 113,000 head. That is up 6k from last week but trails 116k from the same Monday last year.
