Elevance Health, Inc. (ELV) is an Indianapolis-based health benefits company that provides health insurance and related services, including medical, dental, vision, pharmacy, life, and disability benefits.
With a market capitalization of about $85.4 billion, ELV sits firmly in the large-cap category and ranks among the major players in the U.S. health insurance industry. The company’s competitive edge is rooted in its scale, strong brand recognition, and extensive healthcare networks.
However, ELV slipped 7.6% from its 52-week high of $436.24, achieved on July 14. Over the past three months, ELV stock gained marginally, underperforming the iShares U.S. Healthcare Providers ETF (IHF), which has soared 13.6%.
ELV shares rose 15% on a YTD basis, trailing IHF’s 19.8% rise in 2026. But, the stock has climbed 26.5% over the past 52 weeks, outperforming XLV’s 21.6% returns over the past year.
ELV has been trading above its 200-day moving average since late April and has recently climbed above its 50-day moving average, indicating an uptrend.
Over the past year, Elevance Health has outpaced the broader market as its scale, consistent earnings growth, and strong capital allocation have supported a resilient financial profile. Its roughly $200 billion revenue base gives the company significant scale and negotiating leverage, while a diversified business spanning health benefits and Carelon supports earnings stability. Its EPS has grown 7.2% annually over the past five years, outpacing its peer group. More recently, better-than-expected Q2 earnings and improved operating performance have reinforced investor confidence.
ELV’s rival, UnitedHealth Group Incorporated’s (UNH) shares have taken the lead over the stock, with a 20.1% gain on a YTD basis and a 27.9% uptick over the past 52 weeks.
Wall Street analysts are reasonably bullish on ELV’s prospects. The stock has a consensus “Moderate Buy” rating from the 22 analysts covering it, and the mean price target of $445.71 suggests a potential upside of 10.6% from current price levels.
