Mettler-Toledo International Inc. (MTD), headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, manufactures and supplies precision instruments and services for laboratory, industrial, and food retailing applications. Valued at $28.2 billion by market cap, the company also supplies several related analytical and measurement technologies.
Shares of this leading precision instruments supplier have underperformed the broader market over the past year. MTD has gained 9.5% over this time frame, while the broader S&P 500 Index ($SPX) has rallied nearly 19.3%. In 2026, MTD stock is up marginally, compared to the SPX’s 12.9% rise on a YTD basis.
Narrowing the focus, MTD’s outperformance is apparent compared to the First Trust Indxx Global Medical Devices ETF (MDEV). The exchange-traded fund has gained about 4.7% over the past year. However, the ETF’s 2% returns on a YTD basis outshine MTD’s marginal gains over the same time frame.
MTD has experienced mixed market performance, reflecting a tug-of-war between cautious capital spending in its core Western markets and stabilizing growth elsewhere. While top-line revenue growth remained constrained by soft demand across U.S. biopharma and academic laboratory segments, the company demonstrated strong margin resilience through strict cost controls, pricing power, and expanded share repurchases.
On Jul. 30, MTD shares closed down marginally after reporting its Q2 results. Its adjusted EPS of $11.46 topped Wall Street expectations of $10.78. The company’s revenue was $1 billion, matching Wall Street forecasts. The company expects full-year adjusted EPS in the range of $47.15 to $47.50.
For the current fiscal year, ending in December, analysts expect MTD’s EPS to grow 10.8% to $47.35 on a diluted basis. The company’s earnings surprise history is impressive. It beat the consensus estimate in each of the last four quarters.
Among the 12 analysts covering MTD stock, the consensus is a “Moderate Buy.” That’s based on five “Strong Buy” ratings, and seven “Holds.”
This configuration is less bullish than a month ago, with ix analysts suggesting a “Strong Buy.”
On Aug. 4, JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) analyst Casey Woodring maintained a “Hold” rating on MTD and set a price target of $1400.
The mean price target of $1,488.92 represents a 5.8% premium to MTD’s current price levels. The Street-high price target of $1,600 suggests an upside potential of 13.7%.
