Strategy (MSTR), formerly known as MicroStrategy, shares are charging higher on Aug. 20 as Bitcoin (BTCUSD) ripped through the $71,000 level to trade at a multi-month high.
The rally reaffirms MSTR’s standing as the premier corporate BTC treasury vehicle; the company currently has more than 800,000 bitcoins on its balance sheet.
The Bitcoin price action brings a much-needed reprieve to Strategy stock, which is still trading down about 30% versus the start of this year.

Significance of BTC Breakout for Strategy Stock
Bitcoin breakout this morning came on the heels of macroeconomic tailwinds, particularly a major U.S. Treasury liquidity initiative announced on Wednesday.
The unexpected expansion of long-dated bond buybacks injected a fresh risk-on sentiment across global markets, sending capital flowing back into cryptocurrencies.
For MSTR stock, which has effectively become a leveraged play on BTC, any sustained increase in the world’s largest crypto by market cap strengthens the balance sheet and supports its net asset value (NAV) premium.
Note that Strategy has recently soared past its 20-day and 50-day moving averages (MAs), a technical setup that suggests bulls have taken back control of the near term.
Is It Worth Buying MSTR Shares Today?
Buying MSTR shares into strong momentum days requires a clear understanding of your risk tolerance. On one hand, purchasing MSTR offers investors an efficient, equity-based proxy to gain amplified exposure to BTC without holding the digital asset directly.
The stock’s historical trend shows that when Bitcoin embarks on extended momentum runs, MSTR frequently outperforms the underlying token. However, chasing it following a sudden single-day spike carries inherent volatility risk.
Strategy’s enterprise value sits at a premium relative to its underlying BTC holdings, meaning sudden pullbacks in Bitcoin can cause sharp downside reactions in the crypto stock.
In short, long-term believers in Bitcoin may find dips attractive, but entering on breakout days still demands cautious position sizing.
What’s the Consensus Rating on Strategy?
Investors should note, however, that Wall Street firms recommend owning MSTR shares at current levels.
The consensus rating on Strategy remains at “Strong Buy,” with the mean price target of about $228 indicating potential for a more than 100% rally from here.
