Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. (PNC) operates as a diversified financial services company. With a market cap of $98.3 billion, the company provides regional banking, wholesale banking, and asset management services nationally and in the company's primary regional markets.
Shares of PNC have outperformed the broader market over the past year. PNC has gained 27.7% over this time frame, while the broader S&P 500 Index ($SPX) has rallied nearly 20.2%. In 2026, PNC stock is up 18.1%, surpassing the SPX’s 12.6% rise on a YTD basis.
Zooming in further, PNC’s outperformance is also apparent compared to the iShares U.S. Regional Banks ETF (IAT). The exchange-traded fund has gained about 23.3% over the past year. Moreover, PNC’s returns on a YTD basis outshine the ETF’s 14.1% gains over the same time frame.
PNC’s outperformance was driven by robust net interest income (NII) expansion, organic balance sheet growth, and strategic market expansion. The bank capitalized on steady commercial and industrial lending growth alongside fixed-rate asset repricing, which expanded its net interest margin. Its growth was further bolstered by organic market penetration in high-growth Southeast and Southwest regions, complemented by the successful integration of strategic acquisitions like FirstBank. Combined with disciplined deposit cost management, strong credit quality, and aggressive capital return programs via dividends and share buybacks, PNC consistently beat earnings expectations and outpaced its regional banking peers.
For the current fiscal year, ending in December, analysts expect PNC’s EPS to grow 16% to $19.25 on a diluted basis. The company’s earnings surprise history is impressive. It beat the consensus estimate in each of the last four quarters.
Among the 23 analysts covering PNC stock, the consensus is a “Moderate Buy.” That’s based on 13 “Strong Buy” ratings, three “Moderate Buys,” and seven “Holds.”
This configuration is less bullish than a month ago, with 14 analysts suggesting a “Strong Buy.”
On Aug. 6, Jason Goldberg from Barclays PLC (BCS) maintained a “Buy” rating on PNC, with a price target of $284, implying a potential upside of 15.2% from current levels.
The mean price target of $275.72 represents an 11.9% premium to PNC’s current price levels. The Street-high price target of $305 suggests an upside potential of 23.8%.
