Chicago, Illinois-based Motorola Solutions, Inc. (MSI) provides public safety and enterprise security solutions. Valued at $77.7 billion by market cap, the company develops data capture, wireless, infrastructure, bar code scanning, two-way radios, and wireless LAN securities. It also produces voice and data communications products and systems.
Shares of this leading provider of communications and analytics have underperformed the broader market over the past year. MSI has gained 4.4% over this time frame, while the broader S&P 500 Index ($SPX) has rallied nearly 20.2%. However, in 2026, MSI stock is up 25.4%, surpassing the SPX’s 12.6% rise on a YTD basis.
Narrowing the focus, MSI’s underperformance is also apparent compared to the State Street SPDR S&P Telecom ETF (XTL). The exchange-traded fund has gained about 69.6% over the past year. Moreover, the ETF’s 39.5% gains on a YTD basis outshine the stock’s returns over the same time frame.
MSI faced pressure over the past year due to operational cost headwinds, margin compression, and sector-wide capital shifts. Performance was dragged down by rising supply chain expenses, elevated material costs, and GAAP operating margin pressure from acquisition-related amortization and earnout costs. Furthermore, broader macro headwinds including hawkish interest rate sentiment that pressured growth stocks, along with tech sector capital rotations out of low-growth hardware names weighed on share price performance despite strong order backlogs.
On Aug. 5, MSI reported its Q2 results, and its shares jumped over 8% in the following trading session. Its adjusted EPS of $4.41 topped Wall Street expectations of $3.86. The company’s revenue was $3.1 billion, topping Wall Street forecasts of $3 billion. The company expects full-year adjusted EPS in the range of $17.62 to $17.72, and revenue is expected to be $13 billion.
For the current fiscal year, ending in December, analysts expect MSI’s EPS to grow 16.3% to $15.87 on a diluted basis. The company’s earnings surprise history is impressive. It beat the consensus estimate in each of the last four quarters.
Among the 14 analysts covering MSI stock, the consensus is a “Strong Buy.” That’s based on 11 “Strong Buy” ratings, two “Moderate Buys,” and one “Hold.”
This configuration is more bullish than a month ago, with 10 analysts suggesting a “Strong Buy.”
On Aug. 11, Truist Financial Corporation (TFC) analyst Matthew Niknam maintained a “Buy” rating on MSI and set a price target of $545, implying a potential upside of 13.3% from current levels.
The mean price target of $526.25 represents a 9.4% premium to MSI’s current price levels. The Street-high price target of $550 suggests an upside potential of 14.4%.
