Carvana (CVNA) stock closed meaningfully higher as new details surrounding billionaire investor Mark Walter’s ownership stake eased concerns of a potential forced sale.
Investors cheered CVNA as reports confirmed that Walter’s holding is pledged as collateral to Citi, dramatically lowering the immediate risk of large-scale open-market liquidation.
Versus the start of 2026, though, Carvana shares are down more than 15% at the time of writing.

Here’s Why Carvana Stock Rallied on Wednesday
Concerns escalated earlier this week following reports that Mark Walter, who currently holds 30 million Class A shares and 30 million Class B shares of Carvana, might be forced to sell his $2 billion stake to cover external financial obligations.
However, a filing confirmed on Aug. 19 that his entire position is pledged to Citigroup Global Markets as collateral, meaning the billionaire cannot unload shares into the public market without lender consent.
Combined with CVNA’s recent upsized $1.66 billion Senior Secured Term Loan B refinancing, which reduced annual interest expenses by $45 million, the removal of liquidity concerns cleared the path for investors to re-focus on its core operating performance and underlying fundamentals.
Is It Too Late to Invest in CVNA Shares?
While Carvana shares staged an impressive comeback off its weekly lows on Wednesday, investors must weigh the company’s improving debt structure against valuation metrics.
Trading at less than 4x sales with net debt near 1x trailing adjusted EBITDA, the used car retailer looks priced for sustained operational efficiency and continued margin expansion.
The stock remains some 25% below its year-to-date peak, signaling massive headroom if quarterly unit volumes and reconditioning logistics expand as projected.
All in all, for investors seeking exposure to digital auto retail, CVNA presents a rather compelling growth opportunity.
That said, Carvana has a history of closing both September and October meaningfully in the red, a seasonal trend that dulls its appeal for the near term.
What’s the Consensus Rating on Carvana?
Crucially, Wall Street analysts are bullish on CVNA stock for the remainder of 2026.
The consensus rating on Carvana sits at “Moderate Buy” currently, with the mean price objective of nearly $85 indicating potential upside of about 20% from here.
