Moderna (MRNA) shares more than doubled on Wednesday morning after the biotech giant posted promising late-stage clinical trial data for its mRNA-based cancer vaccine. In its press release, Moderna said its investigational treatment, intismeran autogene, developed with Merck (MRK), succeeded in the landmark INTerpath-001 Phase 3 study involving 1,137 high-risk melanoma patients.
Following the meteoric run on Aug. 19, Moderna stock is trading at nearly 5x its price at the start of this year.

Significance of the Cancer Breakthrough for MRNA Stock
The combination therapy comprising intismeran autogene and Keytruda showcased a statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvement in both “recurrence-free survival” and “distant metastasis-free survival” compared to Merck’s blockbuster drug alone.
Representing the first successful Phase 3 readout for an individualized mRNA neoantigen therapy, the achievement marks a monumental milestone for oncology.
In the release, CEO Stéphane Bancel signaled that regulatory submission will be prioritized, with commercial approval potentially arriving as early as 2027.
The disclosure is bullish for MRNA shares as it provides concrete clinical validation for Moderna’s high-margin oncology pipeline, fundamentally shifting its investment story away from declining COVID-19 vaccine sales toward multi-billion-dollar recurring markets in personalized medicine.
William Blair Upgrades Moderna Shares to Outperform
Reacting to the clinical breakthrough, William Blair analysts led by Myles Minter raised their rating on Moderna shares to “Outperform.”
In his research note, Minter said the Phase 3 success de-risks Moderna’s core pipeline, providing concrete proof-of-concept that its mRNA platform can be effectively applied to oncology.
With intismeran autogene poised to potentially expand into other solid tumor indications, William Blair views the breakthrough as a transformative catalyst that fundamentally strengthens MRNA’s long-term commercial profile and market valuation trajectory.
Note that today’s surge drove Moderna decisively above its key moving averages (MAs), with the RSI approaching 90 indicating intense buying pressure.
Wall Street’s View on Moderna
Heading into Aug. 19, Wall Street had a consensus “Hold” rating on MRNA stock, with the mean price target of about $53.
However, it’s fair to expect aggressive upward revisions, as analysts begin to reflect Moderna's cancer breakthrough in the weeks ahead.
