The semiconductor industry has entered a tougher stretch as artificial intelligence (AI) keeps raising chip complexity and pushing chipmakers toward faster, power-efficient processors. The shift has increased demand for advanced design, verification, and simulation tools that shorten development cycles, manage workflows, and improve performance.
Given this backdrop, Synopsys (SNPS) has plenty going for it. The company completed its acquisition of Ansys last year, expanding beyond traditional electronic design automation into multiphysics simulation, digital twins, and broader engineering solutions.
Moreover, Synopsys is strengthening its AI strategy through an expanded partnership with Nvidia Corporation (NVDA), adding another useful string to its bow. It also introduced autonomous electronic design automation (EDA) workflows with Microsoft Corporation (MSFT), now under Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) evaluation.
Furthermore, it has expanded its collaboration with Intel Corporation's (INTC) Foundry, supporting AI-powered EDA flows, multiphysics analysis, advanced packaging, and intellectual property (IP) for Intel’s 14A process. Taken together, these moves give investors plenty to chew on after the stock’s recent struggles tested shareholder patience.
These developments also make the next earnings release important. Synopsys is scheduled to announce its Q3 FY2026 financial results on Wednesday, Aug. 26, after market close. The results will reflect whether the company’s expansion initiatives can translate into solid stock performance again after a stretch that left shares unloved.
About Synopsys Stock
Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, Synopsys is a semiconductor design software and IP company. With a market cap brushing $80.7 billion, it provides EDA tools for designing, verifying, simulating, and manufacturing chips. It also offers pre-verified IP, including processors, security components, memory, and interfaces.
Over the last 52 weeks, Synopsys’ shares have dropped 33.13%. Moreover, it plunged 12% year-to-date (YTD) as concerns about debt and amortization from the $35 billion Ansys acquisition, weakness in the high-margin Design IP segment, and U.S. export controls affecting China sales weighed on its price performance.
Valuation offers another clue. SNPS stock is trading at 28.50 times forward adjusted price-to-earnings and 8.34 times forward sales. Both figures exceed industry averages, yet both remain below Synopsys’ own five-year average multiples. The gap could give investors an attractive entry point, assuming the broader story holds together.
Synopsys Surpasses Q2 Earnings
On May 27, Synopsys unveiled its Q2 FY2026 earnings results, wherein total revenue climbed 41.9% year-over-year (YOY) to $2.3 billion, beating Street forecasts of $2.25 billion. Adjusted EPS fell 8.7% YOY to $3.35, yet topped Wall Street expectations of $3.17, helped by execution despite a diluted share count.
Non-GAAP net income rose 12.4% YOY to $643.7 million, showing underlying profitability actually strengthened even as EPS dipped slightly. Non-GAAP operating margin came in at 39.5% for the quarter, with backlog ending at $11 billion, reflecting continued execution and financial discipline.
Design Automation, now including Ansys, surged 62.3% YOY to $1.82 billion, driven by robust hardware-assisted verification demand and system wins across ZS5, ZeBu, and HAPS-200. Core EDA revenue grew roughly 8% YOY, while Design IP fell 5.8% YOY to $454 million, though it's recovering.
AI tied these developments together. Rising chip complexity lifted EDA and IP, while multi-die architectures and hyperscaler customization helped. Ansys benefited from AI data center build-out and simulation demand across aerospace, defense and automotive. Those trends strengthened Synopsys’ silicon-to-systems positioning and the credibility of its strategy.
Buoyed by this momentum, Synopsys raised full-year FY2026 guidance. Management’s revenue guidance targets $9.665 billion at the midpoint within a $9.625 billion to $9.705 billion range. They also expect non-GAAP EPS of $14.72 to $14.80, and approximately $2 billion in free cash flow.
On the other hand, analysts expect Q3 FY2026 EPS to rise 16.1% YOY to $2.67. Full-year FY2026 EPS is projected to grow 23.1% from the previous year to $10.65, before increasing 20.6% YOY to $12.84 in FY2027.
What Do Analysts Expect for Synopsys Stock?
Analysts remain upbeat on Synopsys, assigning the stock an overall rating of “Strong Buy.” Among 21 analysts covering the name, 16 recommend a "Strong Buy," one assigns a "Moderate Buy," three suggest investors "Hold," while one flags a “Strong Sell.”
To that end, the average price target of $560 implies potential upside of 35.5%. Meanwhile, the Street-High target of $650 points to a possible gain of 57.3% from current levels.
