Alphabet (GOOGL) is the parent company of Google and one of the world's largest technology conglomerates. Headquartered in Mountain View, California, Alphabet's ecosystem spans Google Search, YouTube, Android, Chrome, Google Cloud, and a portfolio of "Other Bets" like Waymo. Under CEO Sundar Pichai, the company has aggressively expanded its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities through Gemini models, custom Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), and AI-powered search features, positioning itself at the forefront of the generative AI race.
Alphabet Stock Leads 2026
Alphabet stock has been one of 2026's standout performers, trading near the top of its 52-week range and comfortably above its 200-day moving average. Shares currently trade around $354, not far from the all-time high of $408.61. GOOGL stock has delivered a roughly 81% gain over the past year as investors have rewarded accelerating cloud growth and AI monetization.
By comparison, the S&P 500 Communication Sector (XLC) has been relatively flat over the trailing year. Alphabet's dramatic outperformance versus the sector highlights how AI-driven cloud and advertising growth have set it apart from telecom and media peers.
Alphabet Results Top Estimates
Alphabet's second-quarter 2026 results, reported on July 22, showed revenue jumping 24% year-over-year (YOY) to $119.8 billion, comfortably topping analyst estimates of $116.9 billion. Adjusted EPS came in at $2.85, narrowly missing the consensus, although GAAP diluted EPS surged to $9.11 from $2.31 a year earlier, boosted by a massive $98 billion in other income tied to equity-securities gains, including stakes in AI ventures.
Google Cloud revenue soared 82% YOY to $24.8 billion, with cloud operating income nearly tripling to $8.8 billion. Google Services revenue rose 15% to $94.5 billion, led by Search's 17% jump to $63.3 billion and YouTube ads climbing 13% to $11.1 billion. Consolidated operating income increased 30% YOY to $40.8 billion, expanding operating margin to 34%, while net income available to common stockholders soared 298% to $112.1 billion.
Management raised its full-year 2026 capital expenditures outlook to a range of $195 billion to $205 billion — up from $180 billion to $190 billion — to accelerate the AI infrastructure buildout, with capex expected to rise further in 2027. CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted Google Cloud's backlog growth of over $50 billion to $514 billion and expanding Gemini Enterprise adoption. Executives flagged near-term margin pressure from supply-constrained capacity but expressed confidence that AI investments will fuel durable, long-term growth across search, cloud, and enterprise offerings.
The AI Shakeup at Alphabet
Google is undergoing a major AI leadership shakeup. Chief Scientist Jeff Dean is departing after 27 years to launch his own startup, Discovery Loop, while DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis is stepping into a chairman role and taking on the Chief Scientist title for Alphabet. DeepMind technology chief Koray Kavukcuoglu has been promoted to head Google's AI division and will lead development of Gemini 4.
The reshuffle comes as Google ramps up its AI push, forecasting up to $205 billion in 2026 capex and posting negative cash flow for the first time on record. Still, Google's cloud business is outpacing rivals, with revenue up 82% last quarter versus 37% for Amazon's (AMZN) AWS and 43% for Microsoft (MSFT) Azure, fueled by strong demand for its Gemini models and homegrown TPU chips.
Alphabet shares fell about 4% on the shakeup news.
Is Alphabet Stock a Buy After the Shakeup?
Alphabet's AI leadership reshuffle rattled investors in the short term, sending shares down roughly 4%, but the underlying growth story remains intact, with Kavukcuoglu taking the AI reins and Google Cloud continuing to outpace rivals.
Wall Street still overwhelmingly favors GOOGL stock. Alphabet holds a consensus “Strong Buy” rating from 54 analysts with coverage. Of those analysts, 47 have a "Strong Buy," three have a "Moderate Buy" rating, and four have a "Hold" rating. The mean price target of $429.02 implies about 21% potential upside from current levels.
