Etsy (ETSY) opened in the red on Aug. 6 as investors reacted cautiously to the firm’s decision to cut jobs despite posting better-than-expected Q2 results.
In its press release, the online marketplace said it’s laying off about 12% of its workforce, which would eliminate about 220 roles in total, primarily in the product and engineering divisions.
That said, ETSY stock remains a blockbuster investment for 2026, currently up about 50% versus the start of this year.

What the Layoffs Really Mean for Etsy Stock
Etsy framed the layoffs as a strategic shift to streamline organizational layers, accelerate innovation, and improve focus amid rising competition.
Still, investors are concerned that cutting jobs, especially in core product and engineering teams, creates execution risk that may slow the rollout of new features, including AI-powered search and discovery tools.
Plus, the workforce reduction will cost Etsy Inc roughly $35 million in severance and restructuring charges, which may squeeze profit margins in the near term.
Note that ETSY shares are currently testing their 20-day moving average (MA), with a clear break below $83 expected to boost bearish momentum in the weeks ahead.
Why ETSY Shares Aren’t Worth Buying on the Dip
Investors are cautioned against buying the dip in Etsy stock given CFO Charles Baker has recently unloaded 3,443 company shares in a transaction valued at $281,000. This could imply that even insiders view ETSY as overvalued, at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of nearly 24x.
Investors should also note that active buyers on the platform dipped 0.4% on a year-over-year basis in fiscal Q2 to 87 million. For a digital marketplace, a shrinking user base typically signals ongoing struggles with acquiring new customers.
It suggests the company is driving growth via higher prices rather than actual transaction volume.
How Wall Street Recommends Playing Etsy
Caution is warranted in playing Etsy shares at current levels also because Wall Street analysts are no longer bullish on them for the remainder of 2026.
The consensus rating on Etsy sits at “Hold” only, with the mean price target of $77.52 indicating potential downside of roughly 7% from here.
