Building a data center is hard. Building a rocket that doesn’t explode on the way to space is harder. SpaceX (SPCX) CEO Elon Musk says that’s precisely why SpaceX believes it has an edge.
Musk made that case during the company’s first earnings call as a public company, arguing that the engineering challenges behind reusable rockets make designing terrestrial data centers look almost simple by comparison.
“As the saying goes, this ain’t rocket science. Well, actually, rocket science is literally our daily business,” Musk said on the call. “Rockets desperately want to blow themselves into tiny pieces.”
He explained that SpaceX’s engineers spend every day solving one of the most difficult engineering problems imaginable: reliably getting massive reusable rockets into orbit without catastrophic failure. That’s why, in his view, building data centers doesn’t require an entirely new playbook.
Why Musk Thinks SpaceX Has an Unfair Advantage
“If you apply a small amount of the engineering skill that goes into making gigantic rockets reach orbit on a regular basis reliably to terrestrial data centers,” Musk said, “this is like, frankly, the New York Yankees going in and playing a little league team.”
Musk wasn’t suggesting data centers are easy. Rather, he argued they’re dramatically less complex than developing reusable rockets or the company’s Starlink satellites, which he described as “alien-level technology.”
He also acknowledged that rocket science remains extraordinarily difficult, noting that even talented competitors continue to face launch failures.
“But you’ll note that some of our competitors do in fact blow their rockets up,” Musk said. “That does not mean they’re incapable. In fact, I think our competitors are very smart people. But despite being very smart, the rockets still blow up.”
His point was that if engineers can repeatedly solve problems at that level of complexity, designing power systems, cooling infrastructure, and server racks becomes a far more manageable challenge.
From Space to AI Infrastructure
SpaceX is already putting that philosophy into practice.
Musk said the company is building terrestrial data centers using many of the same engineering principles developed for Starlink. He has previously explained that the Starmind V1 compute design created for satellites—minus the solar arrays and radiators needed for space—can also be deployed on Earth, allowing the company to reuse technology across both businesses.
As demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure continues climbing, companies are racing to build the computing capacity needed to power next-generation AI models. While hyperscale data centers have traditionally been dominated by large technology companies, SpaceX is betting its aerospace engineering experience can become a competitive advantage in an entirely different industry.
Investing in the Next Wave of AI
Artificial intelligence isn’t only reshaping established technology companies. It has also fueled growing interest in startups building the infrastructure and automation tools that could benefit from AI’s expansion.
Whether SpaceX ultimately dominates data centers the way Musk predicts remains to be seen. But his message was clear: compared with convincing rockets not to “blow themselves into tiny pieces,” keeping rows of servers running looks like a much easier engineering problem.
