Merck & Co., Inc. (MRK) is one of the world's leading pharmaceutical giants, known for developing breakthrough medicines and vaccines that have transformed healthcare globally. Headquartered in Rahway, New Jersey, the company has built a strong presence across oncology, vaccines, infectious diseases, and animal health, with blockbuster products like Keytruda driving its growth. Backed by decades of scientific innovation and a robust research pipeline, Merck continues to play a pivotal role in advancing treatments for some of the world's most challenging diseases.
With a market capitalization of roughly $316.95 billion, Merck has been a standout performer on Wall Street. The pharmaceutical giant's stock has surged 58.8% over the past year and gained 22% year-to-date (YTD) in 2026, comfortably outperforming the S&P 500 Index ($SPX), which has returned 22.6% over the past year and 13% in 2026.
Zooming in further, Merck has also outpaced the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV), which has delivered 23.9% over the past year and 6.1% year to date, highlighting the stock's impressive momentum relative to both the broader market and its healthcare peers.
Merck shares have held up relatively well against the broader market despite intensifying competition and the looming loss of Keytruda's patent exclusivity in 2028. Several drugmakers are developing therapies that could challenge the blockbuster treatment, but Keytruda remains the world's best-selling cancer drug and, even with patent pressures on the horizon, is expected to remain a major revenue driver well into the next decade. That resilience has helped keep investor sentiment largely intact.
Adding to the optimism, the pharmaceutical giant delivered a stronger-than-expected fiscal 2026 second-quarter earnings report on Aug. 4, comfortably beating Wall Street's expectations on both revenue and earnings. Merck generated quarterly revenue of $16.61 billion, up 5% year over year and ahead of analysts' consensus estimate of $16.27 billion. The company reported a loss of $0.13 per share, significantly better than Wall Street's projected loss of $0.26 per share. Meanwhile, sales of Keytruda climbed 5% to $8.37 billion during the quarter, including $463 million from its newer subcutaneous formulation, Keytruda QLEx, underscoring the drug's continued commercial strength despite growing competitive pressures.
For the current fiscal year, ending in December, analysts expect MRK’s EPS to decline 69.7% to $2.72 on a diluted basis. The company’s earnings surprise history is impressive. It beat the consensus estimate in each of the last four quarters.
Despite its strong rally, Wall Street continues to see room for gains in Merck. The stock carries a consensus "Moderate Buy" rating based on 16 "Strong Buy," two "Moderate Buy," and 10 "Hold" recommendations from 28 analysts. While bullish sentiment has eased slightly from two months ago, when 17 analysts rated the stock a "Strong Buy," analysts remain broadly positive on its long-term prospects.
Barclays analyst has recently raised the firm’s price target on Merck to $150 from $140 and keeps an “Overweight” rating on the shares. Analysts see modest upside from current levels, with the average price target of $135.46 implying a potential gain of 5.6%. For more bullish investors, the Street-high target of $155 points to an upside of 20.7%, signaling that some analysts still see meaningful room for the stock to climb.
