On a per-share basis, the Jackson, Michigan-based company said it had profit of 66 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were 71 cents per share.
The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 67 cents per share.
The energy company posted revenue of $1.84 billion in the period, which also topped Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $1.69 billion.
CMS Energy expects full-year earnings in the range of $3.54 to $3.60 per share.
