Consumer use of AI tools to find local professionals jumped to 45% from 6% in one year, while 88% of multi-location businesses remain misrepresented or absent from AI recommendations, creating urgent visibility challenges. Professionals who built an AI presence before the shift are getting found.

45% of Consumers Now Use AI to Find Local Professionals Reports Reveal.
That Number Was 6% One Year Ago. The Professionals Who Built an AI Presence Before This Shift Are the Ones Getting Found.
May 2026 | Visibility 360 Authority Intelligence
One year ago, 6% of consumers used artificial intelligence to find local business recommendations. Today that number is 45%. The shift, documented in BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, represents one of the fastest behavioral changes ever recorded in consumer search history and it is happening directly in the channel where most professionals have no presence at all.
AI does not work the way search engines do. When a potential client types a question into ChatGPT or Perplexity or Google AI, they do not receive a list of options to evaluate. They receive a single synthesized answer… one name, one recommendation, one professional drawn from whatever authoritative published content the AI system has learned from. The professional with a substantial, credible media footprint gets named. The professional without one does not.
The question every professional needs to answer is not whether AI is changing how clients find them. That question is settled. The question is whether AI can find them at all.
The question professionals are asking AI right now: when a potential client asks who to call, does AI name them or name their competitor? The distinction is the difference between being invisible and being the answer.

THE NUMBERS THAT SHOULD CHANGE EVERY PROFESSIONAL'S STRATEGY
BrightLocal found that AI has become the third most used platform for local business discovery, behind only Google and Facebook. ChatGPT leads adoption at 31% of consumers, followed by Google AI Mode at 23%. Among active AI users, 63% trust AI recommendations and 64% trust AI as much as they trust online reviews. AI is not just where clients search. It is where they form decisions.
Martindale-Avvo's January 2026 State of the Legal Consumer report found that 92.4% of legal consumers research their legal issue online before contacting an attorney and that AI has replaced the traditional search, click, call funnel entirely. Clio's 2025 Legal Trends Report found that 43% of consumers have not yet used AI to answer legal questions but said they would. Rio SEO's 2025 Local Search Consumer Behavior Study found that 60% of consumers now click on AI-generated overviews in Google Search before engaging with any other result.
The consumer has already moved. The question is whether the professional has.
WHY MOST PROFESSIONALS ARE INVISIBLE TO AI
AI systems do not browse the internet in real time. They draw from training data, the accumulated body of published content, authoritative media placements, news coverage, and credible sources that existed when the model was trained and updated. A professional whose presence consists primarily of a well-optimized website, a Google Business Profile, and active social media accounts is visible on the internet. They are invisible to AI.
What AI learns from is different: Tier 1 and Tier 2 media placements, published articles in recognized outlets, broadcast mentions, and high-authority content distributed across platforms that AI systems treat as credible sources. The professional who does not have that kind of footprint gets described thinly, inconsistently, or not at all. In professional services, thin and inconsistent is not neutral. The client accepts the name AI does give them, and that name probably belongs to a competitor.
THE WINDOW THAT IS CLOSING
AI authority is built through a sustained body of published content placed across authoritative sources over time. That content accumulates. It trains AI systems. And the professional who builds it first creates a presence that a late-starting competitor will find very difficult to displace. A professional who begins building an AI-visible authority footprint today is building a profile that grows every day, every week, and every month.
In most professional categories and most geographic markets, that position is still open. The attorney who owns the AI recommendation for their practice area in their city hasn’t been determined in most markets. Neither has the physician, the financial advisor, the consultant, or the CPA. The window to establish that position is open now.
The professional who moves first gets found and recommended. Consistently. AI search is already the primary discovery channel for nearly half of consumers and that number is still climbing. That window is open. It will not stay open.
