Lean hog futures ended the first trade day of the new year with 0.5% to 3% losses. Feb hogs were down the most on the day with a $2.62 drop. That widened the spread to April to now $8.72. The summer months are still above $108, at an even greater premium. USDA’s National Average Base Hog price for Tuesday was $74.69. The CME Lean Hog Index dropped 55 cents on 12/29 to $80.19.Â
Pork cutout futures settled the Tuesday session with $0.97 to $2.27 losses. USDA’s National Pork Carcass Cutout value for Tuesday afternoon was $86 flat after a $1.90 drop. Federally inspected hog slaughter for Tuesday was estimated at 483k head, for a week to date total of 508k head.Â
