Gold Futures Market News and Commentary

Precious Metals Close Lower Ahead of the Results of Wednesday's FOMC Meeting

Apr Comex gold (GCJ19) on Wednesday closed down -4.8 (-0.37%) and May silver (SIK19) closed down -0.054 (-0.35%). Precious metals closed lower Wednesday ahead of the results of the FOMC meeting. Strength in stocks reduced the safe-haven demand for precious metals and weighed on metals prices. Also, slack price pressures were negative for demand for gold as an inflation hedge after the German Feb PPI unexpectedly fell -0.1% m/m, weaker than expectations of +0.2% m/m, and the UK Feb core CPI rose by only +1.8% y/y, weaker than expectations of +1.9% y/y. Fund buying of metals is a supportive factor as long silver positions in ETFs climbed to a 3-week high Tuesday and long gold positions in ETFs rose to a 2-week high Monday.
