Gold Futures Market News and Commentary

Precious Metals Close Higher on Dollar Weakness and Expectations for a Dovish FOMC Meeting

Apr Comex gold (GCJ19) on Tuesday closed up +5.0 (+0.38%) and May silver (SIK19) closed up +0.050 (+0.33%). Precious metals settled higher Tuesday on the drop in the dollar index to a 2-week low. Expectations for the Fed to reinforce its dovish holding-pattern rate-stance at Wednesday's conclusion of the 2-day FOMC meeting has undercut the dollar and boosted precious metals prices. Fund buying of metals has increased as well as long gold positions in ETFs rose to a 2-week high Monday and long silver positions in ETFs climbed to a 3-week high. On the negative side is the rally in the S&P 500 Tuesday to a fresh 5-1/4 month high, which reduces the safe-haven demand for precious metals. A bearish factor for silver prices was the +0.1% increase in Tuesday's U.S. Jan factory orders report, weaker than expectations of +0.3% and negative for industrial metals demand.
