Crude Oil WTI Futures Market News and Commentary

Crude and Gasoline Market News and Commentary

Feb WTI crude oil (CLG19) on Tuesday closed up +$1.60 (+3.17%) per barrel and Mar Brent crude (CBH19) closed up +$1.65 (+2.80%). Feb RBOB gasoline (RBG19) closed up +4.76 cents per gallon (+3.49%). The energy complex moved sharply higher Tuesday on signs that China, the world's second-biggest crude consumer, is stepping up efforts to boost domestic growth after senior Chinese government officials pledged to cut taxes "on a large scale" to help support its slowing economy. Another bullish factor for crude is the consensus for Wednesday's weekly EIA crude inventories to fall by -2.5 million bbl. In addition, Brian Hook, the U.S. State Department special representative to Iran, said the U.S. plans to grant no new waivers to buyers of Iranian oil as the U.S. intensifies its efforts to block Iran's crude exports. The energy complex maintained its gains after the API reported late Tuesday that U.S. crude inventories fell -560,000 bbl last week. On the negative side was a rally in the dollar index to a 1-week high and signs of slowdown in U.S. economic momentum that is negative for energy demand after the Jan Empire manufacturing index fell by -7.6 points to a 1-1/2 year low of 3.9.
