Gold and Silver Market News and Commentary

Feb Comex gold (GCG19) on Wednesday closed up +5.4 (+0.42%) and March silver closed up +0.018 (+0.12%). Political turmoil in Britain gave precious metals a boost Wednesday after UK Prime Minister May's Brexit plan was voted down Tuesday in Parliament by a massive margin of 230 votes, a far bigger margin than expected. Prime Minister May was able to win a no-confidence vote in Parliament Wednesday, although the results were released after metals markets had closed. Ongoing stock market volatility has boosted demand for gold as a store of wealth after long gold positions in ETFs rose to a 7-3/4 month high Tuesday. A rally in the S&P 500 to a 1-month high Wednesday reduced safe-haven demand for precious metals and limited gains. A positive for silver was Wednesday's U.S. Jan NAHB housing market index report of +2 to 58 (stronger than expectations of unchanged at 56) which was supportive for industrial metals demand. A bearish factor for silver is ongoing fund liquidation of silver positions after long silver positions in ETFs sank to a 2-1/2 year low Tuesday.
