Precious Metals Close Lower as the Dollar Recovers

Apr Comex gold (GCJ19) on Monday closed down -1.4 (-0.11%) and May silver (SIK19) closed down -0.002 (-0.01%). Precious metals prices gave up early gains Monday and closed lower after the dollar index recovered from a 2-week low and moved higher. Also, a rally in the S&P 500 to a 5-1/4 month high Monday reduced safe-haven demand for precious metals. Gold prices still have support from ongoing Brexit concerns along with speculation that the Fed at the Tue/Wed FOMC meeting will reinforce its dovish holding-pattern rate stance. Another supportive factor for gold is an increase in inflation expectations that may boost demand for gold as an inflation hedge after the 10-year T-note breakeven inflation rate rose to a 2-week high Monday. A bearish factor for silver prices was Monday's U.S. Mar NAHB housing market index of unchanged at 62, slightly weaker than expectations for an increase of +1 to 63, which was negative for industrial metals demand.
