Gold and Silver Market News and Commentary

Feb Comex gold (GCG19) on Thursday closed down -1.5 (-0.12%) and March silver closed down -0.102 (-0.65%). Precious metals moved lower Thursday with Mar silver at a 2-week low after the dollar index rallied to a 1-1/2 week high. Also, demand concerns for industrial metals weighed on silver prices as the partial shutdown of the U.S. government entered its 27th day with no resolution in sight, which has stoked fears of slower economic growth that is negative for industrial metals demand. Losses in gold were limited as global geopolitical concerns and stock market volatility have spurred demand for gold as a store of wealth after long gold positions in ETFs rose for the 14th consecutive day to an 8-month high Wednesday. A positive for silver is stronger-than-expected U.S. economic data on weekly initial unemployment claims (-3,000 to a 5-week low of 213,000 vs. expectations of +4,000 to 220,000) and the Jan Philadelphia Fed business outlook survey (+7.9 to 17.0 vs. expectations of +0.1 to 9.5.), which is positive for economic growth and industrial metals demand. A bearish factor for silver is ongoing fund liquidation of silver positions after long silver positions in ETFs sank to a 2-1/2 year low Wednesday.
