Gold Futures Market News and Commentary

Precious Metals Close Higher on Weakness in Stocks and Lower Bond Yields

Jun Comex gold (GCM19) on Wednesday closed up by +6.2 (+0.49%) and May silver (SIK19) closed up by +0.125 (+0.85%). Precious metals on Wednesday moved higher as they consolidated recent losses. Weak stock prices along with a drop in global government bond yields on Wednesday spurred short-covering in metals. Jun gold earlier tumbled to a 4-month low on Tuesday and May silver slumped to a 4-1/4 month low on strength in the dollar and stock prices. Long liquidation of precious metals has picked up over the last week on strength in stock prices, which curbs safe-haven demand for precious metals. Long gold positions in ETFs fell to a 3-1/2 month low Tuesday and long silver positions in ETFs fell to a 5-week low last Wednesday. Precious metals still have support on increased tensions between the U.S. and Iran after a senior Iranian military official on Monday warned that Iran will close the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway vital for crude exports from the Middle East, if Iran is unable to export crude oil due to U.S. sanctions.
