Feeder Cattle (Pit) Futures Market News and Commentary

Wednesday Cattle Futures Higher at Midday

Live cattle futures are trading through the midweek session’s midday with 42 to 72 cent gains. April was within $1 of the contract high earlier in the session. The midweek FCE auction had 1,233 head listed with no sales. Bids were capped at $163, while the feedlots were looking for $165-$166. Cash trade remains light to unestablished for the week. Midday feeder cattle futures prices are $0.67 to $1.82 in the black. March futures are the outlier with a 2 cent dip respecting the index. CME’s Feeder Cattle Index for 3/27 was $191.34, up by another 10 cents. 

USDA’s Wholesale Boxed Beef prices were quoted at $281.09 in Choice and $269.57 in Select this morning. For Choice that was a 46 cent increase, but Select was down by 79 cents. The ribs were $449.28 and $424.51 cwt. respectively in the AM report. USDA estimated Tuesday’s federally inspected cattle slaughter at 127k head. That set the week’s total at 252k head matching last week and 7,000 more than the same week last year.  Read more
