How Our Pricing Network Helps Members and Commodity Traders

The entire cmdty by Barchart product line is focused on providing folks working in physical commodity markets better information and tools so they can deliver value to their firm. Our end-users take many forms, but ultimately we are most often interacting with individuals that are buying or selling commodities either as an originator/trader or as a member of their firm’s procurement team.

As people operating in these roles know well, having an understanding of where the market is pricing deals is critical for confidence in making decisions that directly impact the bottom line. Furthermore, getting this pricing information directly in the tools they use to do research and analysis is even more important. Building forecasts, influencing internal stakeholders, and creating a personal brand of domain authority is all tied into having access to both pricing and tools.

The problem is that it’s often difficult to find reference pricing for physical commodities, because it doesn’t exist as a data product, is exorbitantly expensive, or doesn’t play nice with the analysis tool these users use day-to-day. Through our solutions for commodity procurement, and broad inventory of physical commodity pricing, we’ve been working to make this easier than ever. Our recent launch of the cmdty Pricing Network (CPN), is our attempt at pushing the envelope for better data and tools another step further.

The CPN is a flexible member-network that allows firms to help increase transparency and access to pricing simply by reporting transactions, bids, and offers that they have interacted with in the physical market. Once firms start contributing data to CPN, they unlock benefits that are exclusive to members - which includes access to CPN pricing, discounted cmdtyView Pro licenses and data feeds, free passes to our exclusive commodity events, and the ability to earn revenue from their contributed data.

The two models for contribution are setup to allow everyone in the physical commodity space to participate, and members can be a part of both. For members that wish to have their data, products, and services be attributable to them, we can treat your data and reports as exchange entitlements - which means no one gets your content unless they are explicitly permissioned. We can then help you market and sell your content to drive new revenue.

For members that wish to contribute anonymously and have their data aggregated with other market participants, we can support that as well. We will be introducing a revenue model for anonymous contribution in the future, so stay tuned!

“We’re thrilled to launch the cmdty Pricing Network as increasing transparency and information flow in agricultural markets is core to helping our partners and clients make better decisions,” says Barchart’s Head of Strategy Keith Petersen. “Our goal is to demonstrate value to our members by providing them with increased insights into their markets, discounted pricing to the very best tools, and access to a network that gives them the confidence to make faster and better decisions."

All of our contributor data is available directly in cmdtyView Pro, our leading solution for commodity trading, and each member of the CPN gets access to cmdtyView Pro. For more information on the cmdty Pricing Network please visit our site.

FAQs

What do you do with the data?

The cmdty Pricing Network was designed to bring transparency and efficiency to the entire grain ecosystem. As a price reporter, we collect wholesale data, apply an unbiased approach to normalizing it, and then distribute this data back out to our customers and members so they can operate more efficiently.

What if I'm already monetizing my data?

That's great! We have multiple models available for our members. For those that are interested in a channel partner relationship, we can expose thousands of our institutional users to your pricing at the price point that you require. You can also participate in the aggregated and anonymous data network that is aimed at increasing transparency.

So there are two models available for contribution?

Yes, and the cool thing is that you can participate in both. For members that wish to have their data, products, and services be attributable to them, we can treat your data and reports as exchange entitlements - which means no one gets your content unless they are explicitly permissioned. For members that wish to contribute anonymously and have their data aggregated with other market participants, we can support that as well. We will be introducing a revenue model for anonymous contribution in the near future, so stay tuned!

Who can see my data?

Your data is completely anonymous, unless you don't want it to be. We take pride is our security, anonymity, and distribution methods. All data is aggregated and anonymized and then delivered back to our members and clients. If you want to advertise your prices by making your data attributable, we can do that as well.
