S&P 500 Index Futures Market News and Commentary
The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) on Tuesday closed down by -3.03%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) closed down -3.15%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) closed down -2.70%.
U.S. stock indexes sold off sharply for a third day Tuesday with the S&P 500 at a 2-1/2 month low, the Dow Jones Industrials at a 3-3/4 month low, and Nasdaq 100 at a 1-3/4 month low. Stocks continue to weaken as the market discounts slower economic growth due to the spread of the coronavirus beyond China. Confirmed cases of the virus are now reported at 80,336 in more than 30 countries, with 2,704 deaths.
Stock losses accelerated Tuesday after the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) warned that Americans should start to prepare for the coronavirus outbreak to spread into the U.S., which they said could lead to significant disruptions of daily life.
