Stocks Recover Early Losses as the S&P 500 Closes at a 5-1/2 Month High on a Strong U..S. July Payrolls Report

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) on Friday closed up +0.06%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) closed up +0.17%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) closed down -1.13%.

U.S. stock indexes on Friday settled mixed with the S&P 500 at a 5-1/2 month high and the Dow Jones Industrials at a 2-month high. Most stocks shook off early losses Friday and settled slightly higher on a stronger-than-expected U.S. payroll report along with better-than-expected global economic data. Escalating U.S./China tensions undercut technology stocks Friday as the Nasdaq 100 closed lower.

U.S. stock indexes recovered early losses Friday and finished slightly higher on signs of strength in the U.S. labor market. Friday's data showed U.S. Jul non-farm payrolls rose +1.763 million, stronger than expectations of +1.480 million.
