Feeder Cattle Futures Market News and Commentary

Cattle Market Closes Monday Higher

At the closing bell for Monday, live cattle futures were 17 to 72 cents higher. December fats closed the day with a 50 cent gain at $138.17. Today was first notice day for December, with the oldest long dating back to October 22nd of 2020. USDA reported very limited trade in the WCB for Monday, with last week’s $140 - $142 bulk maintained as the latest market. Feeder cattle closed Monday $0.85 to $1.12 higher, after trading red through midday. The 12/2 Feeder Cattle Index from CME was 24 cents higher at $161.58. 

Wholesale Boxed Beef prices were weaker in the Monday PM report, as Choice dropped $1.83 and Select was down $0.79. USDA’s FI cattle slaughter estimate for Monday is 122,000 head. That is up from 121k last week and 119k from the same Monday last year.  

Dec 21 Cattle  closed at $138.175, up $0.500,

Apr 22 Cattle  closed at $142.875, up $0.725,

Jan 22 Feeder Cattle  closed at $165.250, up $1.125

Mar 22 Feeder Cattle  closed at $167.950, up $0.850
