Crude Oil WTI Futures Market News and Commentary

Crude Prices Edge Higher on Dollar Weakness and Decline in US Oil Rigs to 3-1/2 Year Low

July WTI crude oil (CLN25) Friday closed up +0.33 (+0.54%) and July RBOB gasoline (RBN25) closed down -0.0169 (-0.81%).

Crude oil and gasoline prices on Friday settled mixed, with gasoline sliding to a 1-week low.  Crude prices recovered from a 2-week low Friday and moved higher as the dollar index (DXY00) tumbled to a 3-week low.  Crude prices also garnered support Friday from better-than-expected global economic news, a positive factor for energy demand.  Crude prices maintained their gains Friday after Baker Hughes reported that active US oil rigs fell to a 3-1/2 year low, a harbinger of lower future US crude production.

Crude prices Friday initially moved lower because of concerns that escalating global trade tensions could curb economic activity and energy demand after President Trump threatened to impose a 50% tariff on European Union goods.  Crude also had some negative carryover from Thursday on concern about a global supply glut after Bloomberg reported that OPE...
