Stock Slump on a Jump in Global Bond Yields

What you need to know…

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Friday closed down -0.91%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -0.48%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -1.18%.

U.S stock indexes on Friday settled moderately lower.  The S&P 500 dropped to a 4-week low, and the Nasdaq 100 fell to a 3-week low.  A jump in global bond yields on Friday sparked long liquidation pressure in stocks.  Stocks fell further after the University of Michigan’s Sep U.S. consumer sentiment index rose less than expected.  Weakness in technology stocks on Friday kept the pressure on the overall market the entire day.

Friday’s U.S. economic data was bearish for stocks after the University of Michigan’s Sep U.S. consumer sentiment index rose from August’s 10-year low by only +0.7 points to 71.0, weaker than expectations of 72.0.
