Description

World stocks - World stock markets in 2025 closed mostly higher as many of the world's key central banks continued cutting interest rates and as earnings growth remained relatively strong. The markets were also pleased with the global economy's resilience in 2025 despite President Trump's tariff regime. The MSCI World Index, a benchmark for large companies across 23 developed countries, rose by +19.5% in 2025, adding to the gains of +17.0% in 2024 and +21.8% in 2023.

Small-Capitalization Stocks - The MSCI World Small-Cap Index, which tracks companies with market caps between $200 million and $1.5 billion, rose by +18.0% in 2025, adding to the gains of +6.4% in 2024 and +13.8% in 2023. In 2025, the MSCI World Small-Cap Index underperformed the +19.5% gain of the large-cap MSCI World Index for the fifth consecutive year.

World Industry Groups - All ten MSCI industry groups rose in 2025, the first time that has happened since 2021. The ranked returns of the sectors in 2025 were as follows: Telecom (+30.9%), Financials (+26.1%), Materials (+23.4%), Industrials (+23.4%), Information Technology (+23.0%), Utilities (+21.7%), Health Care (+13.2%), Energy (+9.8%), Consumer Discretionary (+7.4%), and Consumer Staples (+6.4%).

Emerging markets - The MSCI Emerging Markets Free Index, which tracks companies based in 26 emerging countries, rose by +30.6%, adding to the gains of +5.1% in 2024 and +7.0% in 2023. Emerging markets in 2025 substantially outperformed the MSCI World Index, which represents the developed world, rising by +19.5%.

G7 - The G7 stock markets in 2025 all closed higher. Italy's MIB index posted the best performance, while the French CAC-40 posted the weakest. The ranked returns of the G-7 countries were as follows: Italy's MIB index (+31.5%), Canada's Toronto Composite index (+28.2%), Japan's Nikkei Index (+26.2%), German Dax index (+23.0%), UK FTSE 100 index (+21.5%), US S&P 500 index (+16.4%), and French CAC-40 (+10.4%).

North America - In North America, Mexico's Bolsa index posted the largest gain, rising +29.9%, followed by Canada's Toronto Composite index with a +28.2% gain and the US S&P 500 index with a +16.4% gain.

Latin America - The major Latin American stock markets in 2025 closed mostly higher, with losses only in Venezuela and Jamaica. The ranked returns in 2025 were as follows: Chile's Stock Market Select Index +56.2%, Peru's Bloomberg Peru Large & Mid Cap Index +52.4%, Colombia's General Index +49.9%, Brazil's Bovespa Index +34.0%, Argentina's Merval Index +20.4%, Ecuador's Guayaqui Bolsa Index +13.2%, Jamaica's Stock Exchange Index -5.3%, and Venezuela's Stock Market Index -98.3%.

Europe - The Euro Stoxx 50 index in 2025 rose by +14.1% for the third consecutive yearly gain. The major European stock markets in 2025 all posted gains, with Spain leading.

The ranked European returns in 2025 were as follows: Spanish IBEX 35 index +49.3%, Italian MIB index +31.5%, German DAX index +23.0%, UK FTSE 100 index +21.5%, and French CAC-40 index +10.4%.

Asia - The Asian-Pacific stock markets closed mostly higher in 2025. The MSCI Far East Index rose by +26.2% in 2025, its third consecutive yearly gain.

The ranked returns for the Asian-Pacific stock markets in 2025 were as follows: South Korea's Composite Index +75.6%, Pakistan's Karachi Stock Exchange KSE-100 Index +51.5%, Vietnam's Stock Index +40.9%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng +27.8%, Japan's Nikkei 225 Index +26.2%, Taiwan's TAIEX Index +25.7%, Singapore's Straights Times Index +22.7%, Indonesia's Jakarta Composite Index +22.1%, China's Shanghai Composite Index +18.4%, India's Mumbai Sensex 30 index +9.1%, Australia's All-Ordinaries Index +7.1%, New Zealand's Exchange 50 Index +3.3%, Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur Composite index +2.3%, Philippines' Composite index -7.3%, and Thailand's Stock Exchange index -10.0%.
