Australian Dollar Futures Market News and Commentary

Dollar Retreats From a 2-Month High on Fed Comments and Reduced Liquidity Demand with Stock Rally

The dollar index (DXY00) on Thursday fell -0.045 (-0.05%). Dec euro-fx futures (E6Z0) closed up -0.0008 (+0.07%), and EUR/USD (^EURUSD) rose +0.0007 (+0.06%). Dec yen futures (J6Z0) closed down -0.0001 (-0.01%), and USD/JPY (^USDJPY) rose +0.03 (+0.03%).

The dollar index on Thursday fell back from a 2-month high and moved lower after a rebound in stocks reduced the liquidity demand for the dollar. Dovish Fed comments on Thursday also weighed on the dollar. EUR/USD rebounded from a 2-month low and posted modest gains on dollar weakness. USD/JPY moved slightly higher as strength in stocks reduced the safe-haven demand for the yen.

Thursday's U.S. economic data was mixed for the dollar. U.S. weekly initial unemployment claims unexpectedly rose +4,000 to 870,000, showing a weaker labor market than expectations of a decline to 840,000.
