Lean Hogs Futures Market News and Commentary
Afternoon lean hog trading faded the early session highs, but hogs still ended in the black with 57 to 77 cent gains. April hog futures ended at $87.72, and May at $89.57. The CME Lean Hog Index was $80.70 on the 25th, up from $79.95. USDA’s National Average Base Hog price was $0.13 higher in the PM update at $78.65.
Pork cutout futures closed triple digits higher, but still have limited OI. USDA’s National Pork Carcass Cutout Value was down $1.47 in the PM report at $92.37 cwt. The primal cuts were mostly mixed, but hams were down $6.76. USDA’s estimate for federally inspected hog slaughter was 499,000 head on Monday. That is 10,000 head higher on the week and 8,000 head above the same Monday in 2020.
