Live cattle futures closed 40 cents to $1.10 higher, with front month Jun16 cattle up $5.80 on the week. Feeders finished the day mostly 15 to 70 cents higher, although May16 feeders were down 57.5 cents. May16 feeders were up $6.95 on the week. The CME Feeder Cattle Index for 5/5 was up $1.54 to $144.48. Cash cattle trade on Friday recorded live sales of $124, and dressed sales from $195 to $196. Choice boxed beef prices were down 68 cents on Friday to $203.74 (-$7.71 Fri to Fri), and select prices were $1.18 lower to $194.32 (-$7.95 Fri to Fri). Including Saturday estimates, FI slaughter was 590,000 head, steady with last week, and 24,000 head larger than the same week in 2015. Weekly meat production was estimated at 483.0 million pounds, up 4.7% from the same period a year ago.
